Pitchess Detention Center — still called Wayside or Wayside Jail by many longtime LA residents — is a 2,620-acre Los Angeles County Sheriff’s complex in Castaic housing four separate jails: NCCF (North County Correctional Facility), the North Facility, the South Facility, and the East Facility. We travel to all four Pitchess/Wayside facilities for Powers of Attorney, real estate paperwork, court documents, and other legal forms. Most of our Pitchess clients come from the surrounding Santa Clarita Valley — Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, Canyon Country, Stevenson Ranch, and Castaic itself.

About Pitchess Castaic
Pitchess Detention Center — officially the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, and still known to many longtime LA residents as Wayside Jail — is a 2,620-acre Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detention complex in Castaic, roughly 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The complex houses four separate jails: the North County Correctional Facility (NCCF), the North Facility, the South Facility, and the East Facility. Combined, Pitchess is one of the largest county jail campuses in the United States. We serve all four units when an inmate needs documents notarized without waiting for release.
A quick note on names: the complex opened in 1938 as the Wayside Honor Rancho and was renamed the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center in 1995 after former LA County Sheriff Peter J. Pitchess. Officially it’s Pitchess — but generations of LA families still call it Wayside, and even the Sheriff’s Department acknowledges the old name in its public information. Which Pitchess/Wayside facility?
If you were told an inmate is at “Pitchess” or “Wayside,” that could mean any one of four separate jails on the Castaic campus. Each has its own housing, security level, and professional-visit procedure. Here’s how to tell them apart:

Minimum-security dorm housing. Inmates here are typically closer to release or serving shorter sentences. Professional visits generally scheduled through the same intake process as the rest of the complex.
Minimum-security dorm housing, similar profile to North Facility. Often used for inmate workers and lower-classification housing.
Formerly known as “Pitchess East,” this is a medium-security jail with dedicated housing units and protective-custody assignments. Visiting procedures can differ from the North and South facilities.

How it works
Share the inmate’s full legal name, booking number if available, and what documents need to be notarized. Documents need to be complete and ready to sign before the visit — a notary cannot draft, complete, or advise on the content of a document.
Located at 29320 The Old Road in Castaic, Pitchess is a multi-facility complex. We park at the visitor lot and check in at the administrative building to confirm which facility the inmate is housed in before proceeding. Travel from Granada Hills is typically 35–45 minutes via I-5 North.
We check in with facility staff, clear security, and meet the inmate in the professional visiting area. We verify identity, review the documents, and complete the notarization. Most visits take 30–60 minutes depending on security procedures and document volume.

Before your appointment
Under California Civil Code § 1185(b)(3)(D), sheriff-issued inmate identification is acceptable ID for a signer in a local detention facility. At Pitchess Detention Center that is the LASD booking wristband the inmate wears — matched to the sheriff’s booking record — so you do not need to bring the inmate’s wallet, driver’s license, or passport. Just give us the inmate’s full legal name and booking number when you call.
Bring all pages of the document — not just the signature page. Documents should be fully prepared and ready to sign. Missing pages or incomplete forms will require a return visit. A notary cannot draft, complete, or advise on the content of a document, so anything unfinished needs to be completed by whoever prepared it, or by an attorney, before we schedule.

Yes. Each facility has its own schedule and rules for professional visits. For example, some units may allow professional visits daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, while others may limit visits to weekdays or specific hours. We confirm the current procedures for the specific unit before your appointment.
Because of the travel time and coordination involved, we recommend contacting us at least a few days in advance when possible. For urgent matters, call or text as soon as you know you need the appointment and we will review available options.
