Operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, CRDF opened in 2006 and took over women's housing from Twin Towers, which had temporarily held female inmates after the historic Sybil Brand Institute in Monterey Park closed following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Today, if a woman is booked into LA County custody, she is processed at IRC downtown and then housed at CRDF Lynwood. Is CRDF Lynwood the same as the old Sybil Brand jail?
No, they are different facilities — but they served the same purpose in sequence. The Sybil Brand Institute in Monterey Park was LA County’s women’s jail from 1963 until it was closed after damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Women were then housed at Twin Towers downtown until CRDF Lynwood opened in 2006. CRDF is now LA County’s only jail for women. If someone tells you “she’s at Sybil Brand,” that facility has been closed for nearly three decades — they almost certainly mean CRDF Lynwood.
Where are women held in LA County if they were just arrested?
Every person arrested in LA County — male or female — goes through the Inmate Reception Center (IRC) downtown at Bauchet Street for booking and medical screening (up to 96 hours).
