How it works
Send us the federal document by mail, or drop it off in Los Angeles. We verify the document is a genuine federal record with the correct signatures, seals, or embedded digital certificate. Errors caught here prevent State Department rejection later.
We prepare U.S. State Department Form DS-4194, calculate the exact $20-per-document fee, and package the request. For hand-delivery, we forward the package to our DC-based partner by overnight secure shipping.
Our DC partner delivers the documents to the Office of Authentications at 600 19th Street NW. The walk-in counter operates Monday through Thursday from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. Pickup is typically assigned about 9 business days later.
Once apostilled, the documents ship back to our Los Angeles office by tracked overnight or directly to you — anywhere in the U.S. or internationally. For non-Hague countries, we coordinate the consular legalization step next.

What "Washington DC service" actually means
A California service advertising “Washington DC federal Apostille” either mails documents to the State Department or works with a DC courier or partner. The service itself does not employ State Department staff.
We tell you which route your order uses. Our hand-delivery tier uses a DC partner who delivers and retrieves the documents. Our mail-in tier prepares the package in Los Angeles and sends it to the federal mail facility.
Hand-delivery usually takes about 9 business days, while mail-in takes 5–8 weeks. Same-day federal appointments are limited to documented life-or-death emergencies, travel within 48 hours, federal agency business, or active deportation proceedings.

Washington DC federal Apostille FAQ
Under the Hague Apostille Convention, federal U.S. documents (FBI reports, USCIS certificates, NARA records, federal court documents, and U.S. Department of State-issued documents) are apostilled only by the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications at 600 19th Street NW, Washington DC. State Secretaries of State (including California) cannot apostille federal records.
The U.S. Department of State charges $20 per document, payable by check or money order. This fee is set by federal law, is non-refundable even if the document is rejected, and applies to every federal document regardless of type. Our service fee is separate and covers preparation of Form DS-4194, coordination with our DC hand-delivery partner, tracking, and secure return shipping.
We are a Los Angeles-based Apostille service. We work with a trusted DC-based partner who hand-delivers our clients' documents to the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications and picks them up on the pickup date. This is common industry practice — most California Apostille services either mail documents to DC themselves or coordinate with a DC courier or partner. We are transparent about which step happens where.
Common federal documents include FBI background checks, USCIS naturalization and citizenship certificates, NARA records, federal court documents, and Consular Reports of Birth or Death Abroad. Some Social Security and IRS letters also require federal authentication.
No. California birth, marriage, death, divorce, notarized, and court documents go to the California Secretary of State. Only federally issued records go to the U.S. Department of State in Washington DC. We handle California Apostilles in Los Angeles, with same-day service available for qualifying documents.
Only if your destination country is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. For Hague countries, the U.S. Department of State Apostille is sufficient. For non-Hague countries (some Gulf States, several Southeast Asian and African nations, and others), the document also needs consular legalization at the destination country's embassy in Washington DC. We coordinate the full chain when required.
Form DS-4194 is the U.S. Department of State's Request for Authentications Service form. It must accompany every federal document submitted for Apostille. We prepare it for you as part of our service — you don't need to fill it out. Errors on DS-4194 are one of the most common reasons federal Apostille requests get rejected and delayed by weeks.
