An FBI Identity History Summary — commonly called an FBI background check — is a fingerprint-based report from the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) division. Foreign governments routinely require an apostilled FBI report for visa, residency, work permit, naturalization, marriage, adoption, and dual-citizenship applications. Because the report is a federal record, it is apostilled by the U.S. Department of State, not a state Secretary of State.

Can I use a state background check instead of the FBI one?
Usually not for international purposes. Foreign governments specifically request a federal FBI Identity History Summary for visa, residency, and citizenship applications. State DOJ checks are not federal and go through a different apostille process.
Should I use a Channeler or request directly from the FBI?
Channelers are usually much faster — a few business days versus several weeks for direct FBI requests. For most clients with deadlines, we recommend a Channeler. If you have time and want to save a small fee, direct from the FBI also works.
Can a digital PDF report be apostilled?
Yes, in many cases. The FBI issues digitally signed PDF reports with embedded signatures that the U.S. Department of State will apostille. Some non-Hague countries still prefer paper originals — we confirm based on your destination.
How recent does the FBI report need to be?
Most foreign governments want the report to be no older than 3–6 months at the time of submission. We confirm the recency requirement for your specific destination country.
What if my report shows entries I want to clarify?
An apostille only certifies that the document is genuinely from the FBI — it does not edit or hide its contents. If the report has entries you need to address, we can suggest expungement or rehabilitation steps to take before or alongside the apostille process.
Do I need consular legalization in addition to the apostille?
Only if your destination country is NOT a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. For Hague countries, the apostille alone is sufficient.
