Common Questions

Jail Wedding FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most from families coordinating a jail or prison wedding.

How long does a jail wedding take from start to finish?

The full process typically takes 1 to 4 weeks depending on the facility, approval timelines, and scheduling availability.

What if the inmate does not have a valid ID?

Valid, unexpired government‑issued photo ID is preferred, but if the inmate does not have one, we have solutions and can still work with you. Contact us to discuss your situation.

Can you perform weddings at both county jails and state prisons?

Yes. We handle both county jail and state prison weddings across Southern California.

Why does the minister have to come to the County Clerk?

California law requires that when one party cannot appear in person at the clerk's office (because they are incarcerated), the officiant who will perform the ceremony must be present when the marriage license is issued.

Are there extra fees for mileage, after‑hours, or weekends?

No. There are no hidden mileage, after‑hours, or weekend surcharges. Every case is different, so we provide a personalized quote after learning about your situation.

Do all facilities allow jail weddings?

Most county jails and state prisons allow marriages, but some ICE and federal facilities do not permit them. Contact us and we can advise you on whether your specific facility allows it.

Can rings be exchanged or photos taken?

Most jails and prisons do not allow electronics, photography, or the exchange of any items — including rings — during the ceremony. We recommend checking with the specific facility for their current policies.

How soon will we receive the marriage certificate?

After the ceremony, the minister files the signed marriage license with the County Recorder. The official certified copy typically arrives by mail within 3 to 10 weeks depending on the county.
